Golden Hour at Quail Hill: A Spring Family Session in Irvine
Golden Hour at Quail Hill | Irvine Family Photographer
There is something about late afternoon light in Irvine in the springtime. By the time we got to Quail Hill around 6pm, the sun was already doing the work — long shadows, warm tones, that particular quality of spring light that feels nostalgic and fresh at the same time.
This family of four came ready. A five-year-old with energy to spare and a one-year-old who was in the business of exploring everything within reach. The parents were calm, relaxed and just happy to have time with their children and hopes of at least a few good photos. I would say we accomplished far beyond that.
Why Quail Hill Is One of My Favorite Irvine Session Spots
Quail Hill is one of those locations that doesn't ask too much of you. The trails are easy, the open space gives you room to actually move around and let kids be kids, and that late afternoon golden hour hits the hillside in a way that's hard to replicate anywhere else in Irvine.
It's also low-key enough that your session doesn't feel like a production. We walked, we let the kids lead, and the light did the rest. And on a weekday evening, there weren’t many other people around.
If you're searching for an Irvine family photographer and you want something that feels natural rather than posed, Quail Hill is worth putting on your list and I would love to meet you there.
What a Spring Family Session Looks Like
We started loose. Taking our time while the little ones warm up. A one-year-old and a five-year-old aren't going to stand still and smile on cue, and they shouldn't have to. The best photos from this session came from just letting things happen: the older one showing us how high she can jump, the baby searching for rocks, the two of them in the same frame for about four seconds before chaos resumed.
By the time we hit the best light of the evening, everyone had warmed up, the kids were in their groove, and we had everything we needed. The candids were documented as well as a few families portraits…you know for the Christmas card or the one the grandparents want to hang in their living room.
A Note on Timing Your Irvine Family Session
Spring in Orange County has a short window. The hills are green, the wildflowers are doing their thing, and the light at golden hour is at its best before the summer haze rolls in. If you've been thinking about booking a family session in Irvine, late spring is the sweet spot — and Quail Hill is one of the best spots to catch it.
For sessions with young kids, I almost always recommend late afternoon. Toddlers tend to hit a second wind around 4 or 5pm, and the light is infinitely better than midday.
This session was captured at the very end of spring so the hills turned from green to tan, but the trees and flowers are still in bloom so we had a lovely contrast between the browns and greens.
